Zelensky's strategy and his rejection of peace in Ukraine

 By: Ricardo Abud

Ukraine today is not only devastated in its physical structure, its population is demoralized and has become a country of displaced persons. Zelensky, the comedian of yesterday, has created a comedy of insatiable profit on this geopolitical axis.

Under the pretext of sovereignty, he has plunged this beautiful territory into destruction, and today he dismantles any prospect of peace and makes it look like a kind of mirage in the political desert of this Central European country.

Zelensky insists on a series of unrealizable demands as a prerequisite for starting negotiations with Russia: a complete troop withdrawal, territorial restitution, international tribunals, and security guarantees (similar to NATO membership). These conditions are not a basis for dialogue, but rather a calculated strategy to avoid it. In any conflict, negotiations require mutual concessions, not the prior surrender of one side.

Russia, on the other hand, has expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue without preconditions, despite its military advantage. Recent Russian victories in Kursk and other territories strengthen its position, but Moscow does not demand Ukrainian capitulation as a prerequisite for sitting at the table. Zelensky's refusal to negotiate in this context reveals a clear priority: keeping the conflict active, not ending it.

Another day of war means another day of Zelensky in power. He is not democratically accountable, protected by martial law, and has suspended the 2024 elections. He has also used the aforementioned martial law to accuse dissidents of being pro-Russian and politically neutralize them. Zelensky's endless war provides him with an inexhaustible channel for billions in Western aid to enter Ukraine. Aid that miraculously disappears into the black hole of unstoppable corruption that characterizes the Zelensky government. Aid that does not reach Ukrainian combatants or the civilian population.

The number of displaced Ukrainians is in the millions. According to UNHCR, there are more than 3.7 million displaced Ukrainians within Ukraine and more than 6 million worldwide, especially in peripheral countries such as Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, among others.

Political benefits of endless war

For Zelensky, perpetual war is an instrument of political survival:

  • Concentration of power: Under martial law, elections are suspended, the opposition is silenced, and any criticism is labeled "pro-Russian betrayal."
  • Western aid flow: Billions in arms and funds flow into Ukraine, but systemic corruption siphons off resources while the population suffers.
  • International popularity: Zelensky enjoys an image as a resilient leader, but his prominence depends on the war continuing. Peace would confront him with a disastrous reality: a country in ruins, with a collapsed economy and demands for accountability.
  • The human cost of intransigence
  • While Zelensky rejects dialogue, Ukraine bleeds:

  • Generational loss: Thousands of young people die in offensives with little chance of success.
  • Mass displacement: Entire cities are destroyed, and millions of Ukrainians live as refugees.
  • Dependence on the West: Ukraine becomes a client state, without autonomy to decide its future.

Zelensky has waged a war for political convenience, without premises or ideological conception. He is not a leader seeking peace, but rather one who relies on war. His strategy is not designed to protect Ukraine, but to perpetuate himself in power, finance himself with external aid, and avoid the impeachment that would come with peace.

Zelensky does not want peace, not in the current terms, because it would imply admitting territorial losses and the end of his heroic narrative. For Zelensky, peace is only possible if  it represents a total victory (something unlikely), which suggests he prefers war to an imperfect peace. That is why the Ukrainian people will continue to pay the consequences of the arrogance of a puppet who refuses to acknowledge that he is finished. Future generations of young people, inoculated with hatred of Russia and its exploits to revive fascism as a doctrinal political method, will continue to die. The politics of war are not for apprentices.

The international community must question whether it is supporting a just cause or being complicit with an elite that sacrifices its people for its own interests. True diplomacy demands realism, not fanaticism. And as long as Ukraine remains governed by those who see war as a business, the suffering will never end.

Peace is not achieved with maximalist demands, but with the courage to accept that, sometimes, negotiation is the only way. Zelensky must answer for leading Ukraine to its destruction.

There is nothing more exclusive than being poor.
